Jammu and Kashmir: Separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani dies, alert in Valley, internet shutdown

 Hardline separatist and former Hurriyat (G) chief Syed Ali Shah Geelani died late on Wednesday night. He was 92 years old. Doctors took care of him at home after he complained of difficulty in breathing and chest tightness on Wednesday afternoon. He died late at night around 10:30. He was continuously under house arrest at Hyderpora since 2008.



IGP Kashmir Vijay Kumar said that along with the imposition of restrictions in the entire valley, mobile internet service has been suspended. Meanwhile, Hurriyat leader and Jammu and Kashmir People's League president Mukhtar Ahmed Waza was arrested late night from Anantnag in south Kashmir.



After Geelani's death, the entire valley was alerted. Police and security forces have been deployed at sensitive places. The SSPs of all the districts have been instructed to maintain law and order. Geelani's family members want him to be buried at the Shaheedi burial ground in Srinagar, but expect him to be buried at Hyderpora. On the other hand, the police has appealed to the people of North Kashmir to exercise restraint. People have been advised not to go towards Srinagar.


Three times MLA from Sopore

In June 2020, he resigned from the post of Hurriyat (G) chairman after the abrogation of Article 370. Born on 29 September 1929 in Sopore, Geelani was formerly a member of the Jamaat-e-Islami, but later formed the Tehreek-e-Hurriyat. He was also the chairman of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference. He was MLA from Sopore in 1972, 1977 and 1987.


Mehbooba-Sajjad expressed grief

PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti and People's Conference President Sajjad Gani Lone have expressed condolences on his death. Mehbooba tweeted that saddened by the news of Gilani Sahab's demise. We may not agree on most things, but I respect her for her determination and standing by her beliefs. May Allahtala give him condolences to Jannat and his family and well wishers.
